International Navi-knee conference begins at Chandigarh

Pioneer of computer navigated surgery inaugurates Navi-knee
Human eye can’t operate with precision unlike machine, says Dr Lampe

Chandigarh, January 29
Human eye is not designed to measure small differences in joint angles. Compared to this, computer can measure smallest of angles accurately and repeatedly. This fact eliminates unpredictability involved with conventional navigated knee surgery.
Pioneer of computer navigated surgery, Dr Frank Lampe from Germany said this while inaugurating the international Navi-Knee Meet 2010 that underwent here today. Speaking on role of navigation in joint replacement surgeries, he presented his patient series and results of surgery with orthopilot. Dr Lampe was of opinion that no patient should suffer just because his surgeon could not place the implant accurately.
Over thirty super specialist surgeons from all over India and abroad are participating in the conference which is designed to study the recent advancements in knee replacement surgery.
The meet started with auspicious lamp lightning wherein organizing secretary Dr Harsimran Singh consultant - orthopedics and joint replacement, Fortis Hospital, Mohali flanked Dr Frank.
Delivering keynote address Dr Harsimran outlined tremendous improvement in patient satisfaction brought in by the computer navigated knee surgery. The latest version of Computer navigation system Orthopilot 4.0 has further reduced time required for registration of intra-operative data and chances of error in system are negligible.
He added that system does not require any CT or X ray images, which eliminates need for radiation exposure to patient. The virtual planning option of system allows surgeon to plan whole surgery before actually performing bone cuts. This further enhances safety and accuracy of surgery, he said.
Tomorrow Dr Frank Lampe would speak on experience with ortho pilot navigation, Dr. Harsimran Singh will discuss challenges in navigated TKR, Dr. Vrajesh Shah from Baroda will deal with soft tissue balancing with ortho pilot, Dr. E.G. Mohan Kumar from Kerala will speak on usage of ortho pilot in TKR - Tips n Tricks and Dr. Avtar Singh from Amritsar will speak on experience of TKR with ortho pilot and guidelines for ortho pilot use.
